Beginning Tuesday, Tobin Bridge Will See More Lane Closures

BOSTON (CBS) - There will be more lane closures happening on the Tobin Bridge starting Tuesday, May 14.

One of three lanes on the southbound side will be closed, meaning drivers will only have two lanes of travel in each direction.

Also on Tuesday, northbound lane closures will extend through the Chelsea Curves.

To help ease congestion, as of Tuesday, all drivers will be able to use the I-93 South HOV lane starting at Mystic Avenue in Medford. It will become an express lane to Boston.

"We realize that this is a very difficult project for commuters and we at MassDOT have been doing everything we can to try and minimize impacts," said Jonathan Gulliver, MassDOT Highway Administrator. "It's a very big project and you can't do a big project without having some impact so again we are doing a number of things to try and mitigate those."

The lane closures are part of the ongoing Tobin Bridge construction project, and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said lane closures will remain in place for the next two years.
