Texans Reportedly Release Ryan Mallett

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Houston Texans are down to just one former Patriots backup quarterback on their roster.

The Texans have had enough of Ryan Mallett, releasing the quarterback on Tuesday according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Mallett missed the team's charter flight to Miami on Saturday, and Houston head coach Bill O'Brien reportedly wanted to release him on Monday. GM Rick Smith did not agree with the move at that time.

24 hours later, that tune must have changed.

The 27-year-old Mallett played in six games for Houston this season, starting four of them after taking over for Brian Hoyer in Week 1. But he completed just 53.1 percent of his passes and threw three touchdowns to four interceptions as the Texans stumbled to a 1-4 record. Missing the team plane on Saturday was the final straw for Houston.

The Texans acquired Mallett from the Patriots prior to the start of the 2014 regular season for a conditional draft pick. New England drafted Mallett in the third-round of the 2011 draft.
