Police said 20-year-old Gary Goyette knocked on the teen's apartment door and asked to see him before opening fire.

Investigators were told that several relatives were inside the apartment with the boy when they heard knocking. According to witnesses, the teen and Goyette entered the hallway and talked for a minute before the shooting.

The teen was rushed to a Boston hospital on a MedFlight rescue helicopter in critical condition.  His name has not been made public.

Police, acting on information from the victim's family, arrested Goyette at his home overnight.
