Team Hoyt's Bryan Lyons: 'Any Race With Rick Is My Best Race'

BOSTON (CBS) -- In a tradition going back nearly 40 years, Rick Hoyt crossed the Boston Marathon finish line Monday.

Dick and Rick Hoyt have been a fixture of the Boston Marathon since 1977, when Dick first pushed his son, born a spastic quadriplegic with cerebral palsy, in the marathon for the first time.

In 2015, Bryan Lyons replaced Dick, who retired from running marathons.

"We had a great day," Lyons said Monday. "We thought a lot of people came out last year in the terrible weather, but it was nothing compared to today."

Dick was there to see Lyons and his son cross the finish line, with a tear in his eye.

"That was awesome, to see them go across the finish line," said Dick, who served as Grand Marshal of the 2015 marathon. "They had a great day, the weather's been good."

Marathon champion Uta Pippig met Lyons and Rick Hoyt at the finish line to give Rick his marathon medal.

Team Hoyt finished the Boston Marathon with a time of 04:59:58, but Lyons said it wasn't about the time.

"Any race with Rick is my best race," Lyons said.
