Team Collier Strong Raising Funds For Police Scholarships, Fallen Firefighters
BOSTON (CBS) – A team of runners will honor fallen MIT police officer Sean Collier by running the Boston Marathon next month.
Team Collier Strong is working to raise $50,000 for a scholarship fund benefitting future police academy recruits.
"We kind of have to do it. He would do it," said Sean's friend, Sara Ferry. "He was always up for the next challenge, the next adventure."
A fundraiser held Saturday at The Forum Restaurant added another beneficiary to the team's list: a memorial fund for Lt. Ed Walsh and Firefighter Michael Kennedy of the Boston Fire Department. This past Wednesday, the two died battling a nine alarm fire on Beacon Street.
"When Sean died, that firehouse had a banner. It was a really nice tribute to Sean so we'd like to return that," said Jenn Rogers, Collier's sister.
Team Collier Strong gave the firefighters memorial fund the proceeds of their 50/50 raffle.
As for the scholarship fund, the team will hold another event at Brother's Pizza in Dracut on Sunday, March 30.
They'll cap off the year of training and raising money at Lir Bar on Boylston Street April 9. For more information on the group, visit the Team Collier Strong website.
