2 Manhole Explosions Shut Down Road In Taunton

TAUNTON (CBS) -- Two manhole explosions shut down a road in Taunton midday on Tuesday. Broadway Street between Bay Street and Washington Street was closed but one lane has since reopened.

Crews responded to the area around 11:20 a.m. after a Taunton Police officer working a road detail reported an explosion.

"The cause of the explosion was due to an electrical line that was hit by a road crew working in the area. The damaged electrical line resulted in a fire in the nearest Taunton Municipal Light Plant manhole, and the pressure released from the fire blew one manhole cover off," police explained.
