Sweetgreen At Downtown Crossing Reopens After Correcting Safety Violations

BOSTON (CBS) - Sweetgreen's Downtown Crossing location reopened Wednesday morning after closing because of food safety violations.

Sweetgreen on School Street closed Tuesday when a woman reported she became sick after eating there. City officials found a list of food safety issues, including refrigeration problems and employees not washing their hands.

That prompted the restaurant to shut its doors as they resolved the issues. As of Wednesday, company president and COO Karen Kelly said all food safety issues have been cleared up.

"This morning we reopened our Downtown Crossing location after having voluntarily closed on Tuesday. We took this step out of an abundance of caution for our guests and are pleased that the City reinforced our efforts this morning," Kelly said in a statement.

On Tuesday, Boston's Inspectional Services Commissioner William Christopher said the city had received 30 complaints from customers about the Sweetgreen location over the past few months on top of ongoing safety violations.

Earlier this year, the downtown Sweetgreen closed temporarily because of health code violations. On Tuesday, the restaurant said it closed voluntarily.

According to Kelly's statement, Sweetgreen has been working toward safer practices.

"Over the past few months our company has made significant investments in our infrastructure and our people. We have conducted rigorous food safety training classes throughout our company - including more than 10 here in Boston," Kelly said. "In addition to ServSafe Certified staff at each of our stores, we are working with local and national third-party consultants, like Mérieux NutriScience, to continue validating our food safety standards."
