Sweetgreen Location Temporarily Shuts Down Due To Health Violations

BOSTON (CBS) – The Downtown Crossing Sweetgreen location temporarily closed its doors on Tuesday at the urging of the Boston health inspectors after multiple violations were found inside the restaurant.

Sweetgreen, a California-based chain with eight stores in Eastern Massachusetts, was "strongly encouraged" to close after the violations were discovered.

It was the second Sweetgreen location to close this year in the area. In August, Sweetgreen on Boylston Street was closed due to "critical violations."

Karen Kelley, the president COO of Sweetgreen, issued a statement on the violations.

Today, Sweetgreen agreed to voluntarily close its Downtown Crossing location after a customer complaint and a city inspection.  While the City provided us a week to address the issue, we chose to fix the problem immediately. We then took the proactive step to close for today to allow additional time to review all of our kitchen equipment and our ingredients, as well as conduct an on-site training with our staff. The safety of our guests is paramount and we are currently working with the Boston Health Inspector so we can reopen as soon as possible.

Among the violations were fly infestations and dirty prep stations. The health inspector said he was most concerned about the manager in charge who did not have proper knowledge to keep the restaurant up to code.

The restaurant closed at 11 a.m., but was reportedly seen serving take-out food at 1:30 p.m., something the inspector said he will look into.

Inspectors plan to be back at the location on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m.
