Home Erupts In Flames After Everett Standoff

EVERETT (CBS) -- An Everett neighborhood was turned into a war zone on Christmas, as police and a SWAT team rushed to Summer Street after receiving 911 calls from neighbors about a man firing a gun.

53-year-old Mark Lavoine was inside the house, when police fired pepper spray, but he refused to come out.

The standoff lasted about four hours before Lavoine he approached police. He was immediately taken into custody.

"He came out with his hands up," says one neighbor. "And right when he came out, you hear a big boom and then the house just started going (up) in flames."

The house quickly became engulfed within Lavoine being arrested.

"As he came to the front door, officers observed flames coming from the home," says Everett Police Chief Steven Mazzie. "He came out onto the front porch, (and) the fire was already going at that point.

"He came out they took him into custody. He did not come out and just surrender. He was arguing with officers and resisting when he came."

Police say Lavoine had three handguns on him. No one was seriously hurt during the situation.

Investigators don't believe Lavoine fired at them, but he likely will face multiple charges.
