Suspect Sought In Fairhaven Shovel Attack

FAIRHAVEN (CBS) – Police in Fairhaven are looking for a man who assaulted another man with a shovel Tuesday night.

According to police, a 48-year-old man was shoveling snow on Oxford Street when he was approached by a younger man carrying a metal shovel who asked if he needed help. When he told the man he did not need help, the suspect started striking the victim with the shovel.

Police say the suspect struck the victim about ten times and then fled on foot. The shovel used by the suspect was a metal spade-type shovel used for digging and the handle was broken during the attack.

The victim was treated at the scene and taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

The suspect is described as a white male between 25 and 30 years of age with dark hair, dark eyes and a faint mustache. The victim said he had never seen the attacker before.
