Suspect Captured After Chase And Fall Into Netting Beneath Tobin Bridge
CHELSEA (CBS) – A police chase ended Saturday morning with a man caught in netting suspended over the Mystic River beneath the Tobin Bridge.
The incident began with Malden police putting out a bulletin for a suspect involved in a domestic incident.
Around 9:37 Saturday morning, Chelsea police got word from Malden police to be on the look out for an Everett man who allegedly tried to kill a family member in Malden, Chelsea police told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Mark Katic.
The suspect's black Lincoln Town car was spotted in the parking lot of the Chelsea Market Basket soon after.
Police tried to talk to the man but he soon fled and a chase began that led the suspect and police to the upper deck of the Tobin Bridge.
According to Chelsea police, the suspect swerved at one police vehicle before coming to a stop.
The suspect got out of his car and was soon dangling from the rail of the Tobin and fell into the construction netting on the lower deck.
There was a heavy traffic on the Tobin while police and firefighters from the Chelsea technical rescue squad got the man out of the netting.
Chelsea police have identified the suspect as Mustafa Laassal, 49. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment of a severe leg injury.
He is facing charges in both Malden and Chelsea, police said.
