Study: Newton Is Country's Best City To Live

BOSTON (CBS) – There are countless cities around the country for potential homeowners to consider living. But according to one report, the best can be found right in Massachusetts.

According to a formula created by 24/7 Wall St., Newton is the best city to live in out of 550 cities across the country that were considered.

Quincy also landed on the list, coming in at No. 33.

Data was collected by 24/7 Wall St. to determine the list in seven major categories. The criteria considered was crime, economy, education, housing, environment, leisure, and infrastructure.

"Within each category, specific data points contributed to category ranking," the website explained.

"For example, the economy category included median household income, cost of living, employment growth between 2011 and 2013, and the 2013 unemployment rate. We then used a formula to weight each category and convert each category rank to a meta rank ranging from 0-100. Crime, economy, education, and housing received full weights, while environment, leisure, and infrastructure received half weights."

Newton's top numbers were its crime rate of 98.7, its education figure of 91.1 and its environment number, which was 95.3.

Quincy's highest figure was in the environment category, where it reached 98.2, according to the study.

24/7 Wall St. is a Delaware-based company that provides financial news and opinion on its website.
