Student Visiting Mass. From Western Europe Diagnosed With Measles
BOSTON (CBS) – Massachusetts health officials have confirmed the first case of measles in the state this year.
The patient is a student visiting from Western Europe.
Measles is very contagious, but officials highlighted the state's high immunization rate as a key safeguard.
"Over 95% of students in Massachusetts have already been vaccinated against measles, making a widespread outbreak unlikely," said Dr. Monica Bharel, Commissioner of Public Health.
People may have been exposed to this person at several locations last week:
-The JFK Library
-Harvard Square
-The Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester
-Quincy Market
-Commuter Rail between North Station and the North Shore
Symptoms of the measles include a cough, runny nose and a rash.
