Stray Bullet Lands On Slipper In Sleeping Brockton Girl's Bedroom

BROCKTON (CBS) – A young girl was unharmed when a bullet flew into her Brockton bedroom, but her family remains shaken by the close call.

A .40-caliber bullet struck the young girl's ceiling and landed harmlessly in a slipper. It came from the driver of a car that was wildly firing shots while chasing two other people nearby.

"I got on the floor and the rest of the 'pop pop pops' kept going," said Lori MacMurdo, whose granddaughter's room was hit with the bullet. "And at the same time my 5-year-old granddaughter came out of her room yelling 'Nana, Nana!'"

A hole in the young girl's ceiling shows the damage caused by the bullet.

The West Harvard Street incident was one of six shootings Brockton police responded to in a 24-hour span earlier this week.

Family members and neighbors in the neighborhood told WBZ-TV's Ken MacLeod they are frightened and disgusted by the violence breaking out in the area.

"No regard for life or anybody, and just kept on going like it was nothing," said Richard MacMurdo.

Next door, Matthew Leach had just left the couch and gone to bed when a bullet crashed through a window and into his home.

"Thank god I got up," said Leach. "The bullet is still in my house. It's still in my wall."

Some residents declined comment on the shooting as they did yard work the next day, fearing retribution since there have yet to be any arrests.

But the MacMurdo family is among the residents who feel it's time to speak up.

"Kids today are not afraid of dying. They're not afraid of shooting somebody," said Lori MacMurdo.

"It can't be stopped by just the police. It can't," said Lori MacMurdo.
