Stevens On Visit To Walter Reed Medical Center: One Of My Favorite Days Of Year

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Celtics and Red Sox were both in the nation's capital on Tuesday, and both teams paid a visit to the Walter Reed Medical Center to visit with wounded veterans.

Celtics head coach Brad Stevens joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Gresh & Zolak on Friday, and said the trip to Walter Reed was one of his favorite days of the season.

"We got a chance to meet [the Red Sox] at Walter Reed, and it was great to spend time with them. But more importantly -- and they would say this as well -- was to get a chance to spend time with the patients that are there. Talk about heroes and inspiration, it doesn't get any better than that," said Stevens.

"It was an honor to be invited there, and it was neat that both organizations could do that together," said Stevens. "It's one of those things, you go and do that and whatever joy you bring to them, you're getting it triple. It's giving yourself and being able to be there, spend time with them and see their engaging personalities. It's absolutely awe-inspiring. Those people have gone through really tough things but continue to fight and have a great attitude about it."

"All of us were in awe of the real heroes in the room," said Stevens. "That was one of my favorite days of the year."

Stevens was also asked about now being included in the Boston coaching fraternity with Bill Belichick, Claude Julien and John Farrell. All three of them have championship rings, something Stevens strives for as the new kid in town.

"We're not in any of their ball parks right now," he said of that Celtics. "That being said, they're three teams I can learn from and be around. We hope that every single day and every hour that you're putting into it eventually leads to [a championship]."
