Stephen King: 'Time To Cool The Clown Hysteria'

BANGOR, Maine (CBS) – Stephen King has something to say about all those creepy clown sightings.

All over the country, there have been reports of strange incidents involving suspicious clowns.

Authorities in North Texas said Monday they're investigating several tips about clown threats, while arrests related to clown-related incidents have been made in Ohio.

And now Maine's master of horror, who knows a thing or two about terrifying clowns, tweeted Monday that the "clown hysteria" has gotten out of hand.

King also weighed in on clown sightings in North Carolina last month in a statement to the Bangor Daily News.

"The clown furor will pass, as these things do, but it will come back, because under the right circumstances, clowns really can be terrifying," he told the newspaper.

Some have speculated that the clowns are really just promotion for a new film version of King's famous book "It," but the production company has denied it's a marketing stunt.
