Newburyport Police Officer Hurt In I-95 Crash

NEWBURYPORT (CBS) -- A Newburyport police officer was hurt when his cruiser was rear-ended by a vehicle on Interstate 95 North early Thursday morning.

The crash happened around 1:20 a.m. while the officer was working a construction detail in Newburyport.

Walsh Construction was doing work at Whittier Bridge, police say, and it required a right lane closure.

He was taken to Anna Jacques Hospital.

The officer was later taken to a Boston hospital.

The extent of his injuries and current condition are unknown.

Police say the driver of the other vehicle was not taken to the hospital.

The crash remains under investigation by State Police.
