BOSTON (AP) — A Massachusetts state senator is recovering after surgery to remove a tumor from his brain.

Sen. Kenneth Donnelly, an Arlington Democrat, was hospitalized over the weekend.

An announcement on Donnelly's website says he underwent successful brain surgery on Tuesday and was resting comfortably. His medical team was said to be very pleased with the outcome of the surgery.

A retired firefighter, Donnelly has served in the Senate since 2009 and currently holds the position of majority whip.

Donnelly is seeking re-election in November. His district also includes Billerica, Burlington, Lexington and Woburn.
