State Police: Walking On Frozen Charles River Can Be 'Dangerous And Deadly'
BOSTON (CBS) – City officials are warning residents that though the waters of the Charles River may appear to be frozen solid, that's not the case.
Massachusetts State Police and the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) said that unlike frozen ponds, the level of the river changes daily and thus the ice is highly unstable.
"While the Charles River can ice over in the winter, and the ice may look very stable, walking on the frozen river could be dangerous and deadly," the state police and DCR statement said.
Officials said walking across the river poses dangers to residents and first responders.
Signs indicating the unsafe ice conditions have been placed along the Charles River to warn anyone who may be considering walking on, crossing, or skating on the ice.
