State Police Investigating Serious Crash On I-93 In Wilmington

WILMINGTON (CBS) -- State Police are investigating a serious two-vehicle crash on Interstate 93 southbound in Wilmington on Monday.

Officers were called to the crash near exit 40 around 5:40 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a 25-year-old Brockton man was driving south on the highway in a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis, when his vehicle rear-ended a 2007 tractor-trailer, which had slowed down due to heavy traffic.

The driver of the Mercury was flown by MedFlight to Brigham and Women's Hospital. He suffered serious injuries.

Police say a seven-month-old female passenger in the car was not injured.

A 30-year-old Atkinson, New Hampshire man driving the tractor-trailer was not hurt.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

No one has been arrested.

Traffic was backed up for nearly an hour.

State Police were assisted by Wilmington firefighters.
