State Police Investigate Nahant Wrong-Way Driver, Trooper's Actions

NAHANT (CBS) – A driver was caught on camera traveling for about a mile on the wrong side of the road in Nahant Tuesday morning.

A State Police trooper nearby followed the driver, but did not pull over the woman behind the wheel.

Ricky, the man who captured the video on the Nahant Causeway, wants answers.

"She stayed on the right hand side, on the opposite side of the road and there was probably at least six cars coming that way and they're all beeping at her, trying to get her out of the way," Ricky said. "At the last second she just swerved out of the way."

Ricky thought the woman would be pulled over when he saw a State Police SUV parked at the end of the causeway.

"There was no doubt that he saw her coming down that whole time," Ricky said.

Ricky followed as the trooper trailed the silver Chevy, expecting to see the cruiser's flashers go on any second, but the trooper never stopped her.

"He's not doing his job," Ricky said. "They're out there for our safety and she clearly was driving recklessly."

Police say there will be a criminal investigation into the wrong-way driver and an internal investigation into the state trooper.

State Police also say the witness should have called 911 and not video-taped the incident while driving.

Ricky says he called State Police but hung up when he was on hold for too long. He says he also called the Nahant Police.
