Springfield Townhouse Fire Kills Woman, Dog

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A woman has been killed in a townhouse fire Friday night in Springfield that also injured two other people.

Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger tells the Republican newspaper that the woman's son escaped the fire and thought his mother was right behind him but she did not make it out. He said the woman's dog also died. She was found on the second floor of the Canon Circle home.

Leger said a 13-year-old boy was hospitalized with smoke inhalation and a woman in her 30s was hospitalized with burns but are expected to recover.

Five people were in the house when the fire broke out at about 9:30 p.m.

Fire officials are investigating but say a candle is suspected as the cause.
