Springfield Police On Drug Raid Find Gun In Hollowed-Out Bible

SPRINGFIELD (CBS) -- Officers on a drug raid in Springfield found a gun hidden in a hollowed-out Bible on Wednesday night.

Police say Jimmie "Mook" James was selling cocaine from his second-floor apartment on Whittier Street. They found cocaine, drug paraphernalia, scales, money and cutting agent in the residence.

Then, a detective searching James' bedroom noticed a Bible on his nightstand.

"Detective Kalish who did not think 'Mook' was a religious person, opened the Bible and discovered that the 'Good Book' was actually a hiding spot for a Smith & Wesson .9mm semi-automatic handgun and clip that contained ten rounds of ammo," police said.

Police said it appears James took the time to hollow out the Bible "instead of actually reading it."

The 32-year-old James faces several charges, including resisting arrest, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and "Improper Storage of a Firearm (Bible)."
