Spring Sports Off To Slow Start On Frozen Fields

WESTWOOD (CBS) --- Snow covered tracks and frozen turf, getting in shape for spring sports isn't easy under current weather conditions.

Monday was the start of spring sports for Massachusetts high school athletes.

"The hardest part is that it has been so cold for so long," athletic director Matt Gillis said.

The warning track on the baseball field is mud, making it impossible to hold practice there. The baseball and softball teams are now stuck practicing on the artificial turf field that the lacrosse team uses.

"The biggest challenge is coordinating with other teams for space," junior varsity softball coach Chuck Tapsell said.

With warmer temperatures still elusive, Gillis said some early-season games may need to be rescheduled. In the meantime, athletes are hoping March goes out like a lamb.
