Southie Deer Caught After Running Wild Through Boston Streets

BOSTON (CBS) -- A deer that went on a two-day romp through South Boston has been caught.

The #SouthieDeer became a minor social media sensation Monday as it was seen bounding through the streets of South Boston.

One person caught the 80-pound doe on camera trotting through traffic at N and 4th streets. The deer may have come from Thompson Island, and was reportedly seen swimming in Pleasure Bay.

But the deer's big city adventure came to an end on Tuesday morning, after Mary Whelan noticed something in her yard while watering flowers at 7 a.m.

"I happened to look up and here's this big beautiful deer looking at me," she told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

She called 911, the mayor's office and other agencies, but couldn't get anyone to come down and help the deer right away. Whelan was afraid the deer might run back into the road.

"It's a very busy street here," she said.

Hours later, environmental police shot the deer with a tranquilizer dart in her yard.

The deer was loaded onto a pickup truck to be moved to a safer location in the Blue Hills.
