Somerville To Fine Property Owners That Don't Shovel
SOMERVILLE (CBS) - Somerville residents and business owners have two options this winter: shovel sidewalks or be fined.
Somerville's snow ordinance says property owners are required to shovel sidewalks by 10 a.m. if the snow stops falling overnight and by 10 p.m. if the snow stops during the day.
However, there might be some leeway given to property owners depending on the circumstance.
"The exceptions happen when you have such large amounts of snow like during 'snowmageddon,' the first blizzard, and the recent storm," Mayor Joseph Curtatone told WBZ.
"...We inform residents that we'll extend the time period to shovel sidewalks because it's just reasonable given the amount of snow."
Residential property owners failing to shovel sidewalks in a timely manner will be fined $50 for the first offense.
Commercial property owners that neglect to shovel sidewalks will pay a fine of $150.
