Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone Says NO to Secure Communities

May 31, 2014
The Mayor of Somerville Joseph Curtatone has said no to the secure communities program, becoming the first Mayor to put limits on the federal program which became mandatory in 2013. Mayor Curtatone says Secure Communities has been a failure because more than half of those people deported from Massachusetts in the past two years had no criminal convictions. The Mayor also says it is separating families and discouraging cooperation with police and the reporting of crimes. On this edition of Centro, Yadires Nova-Salcedo talks with Patricia Montes, Executive Director of the non-profit organization Centro Presente, which advocates for Latino immigrant rights. Tune in!
