Somerville residents warned to lock doors and windows after several home break-ins

Somerville residents warned of man breaking into homes at night

SOMERVILLE - Police are warning Somerville residents to lock their doors and windows due to "multiple incidents" of someone breaking into homes overnight.

At least one man has been entering the homes between midnight and 6 a.m. through first-floor windows that were left unlocked. The incidents are happening on the Beacon Street corridor near Cambridge.

"He looked through the window, opened the window and then crawled through," said Matthew Knight. He said a man broke into his Somerville home. His roommate happened to be there and came face to face with the intruder. The man was seen on a doorbell camera video.

"I know he ran to the kitchen to get a knife or something and then by the time he came back, the guy had ran back into his bedroom, jumped out the window," said Knight. He said the man didn't have a backpack or anything on him that would indicate that he was there to rob them.

Knight added that his neighbors had seen another man canvassing cars and doors in the weeks leading up the break-in at his home.

"Pretty horrifying, pretty intense," said Logan Tooth. "Like obviously, it's a busy intersection and we've had people crash and stuff before but nothing like this, so pretty intimidating."

Police on Thursday also shared a surveillance image of someone suspected in a breaking and entering in a separate location back on June 16; they do not have evidence that this person is involved in the Beacon Street corridor break-ins.

Additionally, residents are asked to call police if they see any unusual or suspicious behavior in their neighborhood.

"It's a little surprising. I can't say I've heard anything like that before, I've lived here since September, so not quite a year. It's a very peaceful neighborhood, I'm a little surprised."
