Dangerous Cold: Wind Chill Warning This Weekend

BOSTON (CBS) -- We've pretty much dissected the cold every which way this week.  It's here. It's going to be brutal for a couple of days. And then it's out as quickly as it came in.

Don't underestimate the power of this arctic air mass. Wind chill readings will be dangerously cold (-15 to -30 degrees) on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Frost bite can develop in as little as 10 minutes in conditions like this, so be sure to layer up and cover exposed skin.

In terms of a historical context, record lows are within reach Sunday morning.  But believe it or not, we've been much colder before.

The other weather headline is snow on the way for tonight.  Low pressure will develop off the Carolina coastline later today and strengthen into a significant ocean storm.  It'll come close enough to graze the south coast and Cape Cod with a bit of snow late this evening (starting between 9-11 PM) into the pre-dawn tomorrow.

While this event will be fairly minor, slippery roads and reduced visibility will result, so use caution in those areas. The good news is the snow will be very fluffy – easy to clean up and move around when you wake up tomorrow morning.

Looking ahead to next week, our next disturbance looks quite juicy.  It should be cold enough on Monday that as the leading edge of precip moves in, we'll see a brief burst of snow and potentially some wintry mix before changing over to rain in most of southern New England.  Temperatures on Tuesday will jump into the 40s (even some low 50s not out of the question) as heavy rain moves through.  We'll watch it for you.

Until then, stay warm and have a wonderful weekend!
