Shaughnessy on Gresh & Zo: Is Brady Best Boston Athlete Ever?
BOSTON (CBS) - Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak in studio Wednesday to talk about where Tom Brady stands among the best Boston athletes of all time.
In his 15th year with the Patriots, Brady won his fourth Super Bowl and third Super Bowl MVP to go along with his two league MVPs, 10 Pro Bowl selections and the most playoff wins for a quarterback in NFL history.
"There's more to Tom Brady and his legacy in Boston than just what happened in Super Bowls," said Andy Gresh.
Shaughnessy explained that the "Mount Rushmore" of Boston athletes could be argued as the best player to ever play in their respective sports: Brady in the NFL, Bill Russell in the NBA, Ted Williams in MLB, and Bobby Orr in the NHL.
"No other city can do that. I don't care if you're New York, L.A., Chicago, whatever," said Shaughnessy.
Gresh and Zolak noted that in recent decades, Boston sports could only include Brady into the discussion, with outside considerations for former Celtics swingman Paul Pierce and Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz.
"This is more about guys from the '60s, '70s and '80s than it is since the turn of the century," said Gresh.
Shaughnessy disregarded Pierce as being in the discussion and when naming the all-time Celtics starting five because of only winning one championship, in addition to his immaturity at the start of his career. However, he did include a different category for Ortiz -- as being one of the most clutch athletes of all time.
"David [Ortiz] has certainly made his bones at the greatest clutch hitter any of us have ever seen. He's going to be 40 this year, and he is reaching levels now at an age that almost hasn't been done before," said Shaughnessy.
