13 People Injured In Dennisport Fire

DENNISPORT (CBS) - Thirteen people were injured in an overnight fire in Dennisport, officials say.

The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. on the first floor of the Seabreeze Condominiums on Center Street.

Dennis Fire Chief Mike Dellner said firefighters arrived to find several people jumping out of second floor windows to escape the flames and smoke.

Dellner said the blaze breached a fire wall and destroyed six apartments.

According to Dennis Fire, a neighboring resident pulled a handicapped woman to safety from a first floor window before they arrived.

"I just did what I thought I should do," Robert Johnson told WBZ-TV's Bree Sison of the rescue of his neighbor.

"The girl was trying to get out the window," he explained. "So I yanked the window and I pulled everything out and she came with it."

Seven residents were taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital. Two of the victims were transferred to Boston hospitals. Two other residents transported themselves to Cape Cod hospital for treatment.

Two firefighters and two police officers were also taken to Cape Cod Hospital.

Approximately 36 people are believed to have been displaced by the fire.

The Red Cross is providing support to affected residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
