Secret Service Agent Injured In New Hampshire Crash Gets Married

BOSTON (CBS) -- A Secret Service agent who suffered a serious spinal cord injury in a New Hampshire crash two weeks ago married his fiancee Saturday in his ICU room at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Garrett FitzGerald, 30, and his fiancee Joan Lyall, 28, moved to Boston in September. After 9 years of courtship, they scheduled their wedding for March, but moved it up due to FitzGerald's upcoming rehab schedule.

"There was not a dry eye in his ICU room as family from all over the world video streamed the ceremony live. Cheers to Garrett and Joan and a lifetime of memories, happiness and smiles together," read an update posted on the GoFundMe page set up for Fitzgerald.

The crash that injured FitzGerald occurred when a car struck a van carrying Hillary Clinton's Secret Service detail in Wakefield, New Hampshire. The driver of the car, 45-year-old Bruce Danforth, died at the scene. Three other Secret Service agents were injured, but were treated and released.

FitzGerald, who will eventually be transferred to a rehabilitation center in either Boston or New Jersey, is determined to walk again. Initially, he was unable to feel anything below his shoulders. Lyall spoke to WBZ-TV last week about his recovery.

"He's regaining," Lyall said. "Every day, he's doing a little bit more. He's moving his right arm, which is exciting. Little victories."
