Second Truck Crashes Into East Boston Overhang

EAST BOSTON (CBS) - For the second day in a row, a tractor-trailer smashed into an overhang on Neptune Road making a turn onto the ramp to Route 1A south.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens reports:

Check: Traffic Updates

So if this scene looked familiar Wednesday…

That's because the same thing happened Tuesday.

The driver in Wednesday's incident, Michael Hunter, told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 he didn't know the height was 12 feet because the only sign stating that is right about where it becomes 12 feet.

"If I'd had seen that sign up here or right there, I would have went straight. This would have never happened," he said.

Hunter recommends the state put the sign up to warn drivers before they go under the bridge or the same thing is going to happen again.

MassDOT spokeswoman Sara Lavoie said in an email Wednesday they are looking at improving signs in the area, as well as making possible changes to the road, "perhaps extending a traffic island, to make the prohibited movement more obvious."

They're also exploring the possibility of hanging chains from the overpass to serve as another reminder to truck drivers that height is an issue in this location.
