Salem Power Plant Shutting Down After 60 Years

SALEM (CBS) – After 60 years in operation, a controversial coal-burning power plant in Salem is shutting down.

The Salem Harbor Station will cease operations just after midnight Saturday.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe reports

Some neighbors say good riddance. They complain that the plant for years spewed soot that ended up on window and cars and in pools.

But others point out the plant has been a steady employer and taxpayer to the city.

Operator Footprint Power is proposing to replace the coal-burning power plant with a natural gas-fueled facility.
