Sagamore Bridge Shut Down After Cranberry Truck Crash

BOURNE (CBS) – A truck driver was seriously hurt in a crash that shut down the Sagamore Bridge for two hours and left cranberries all over the road during the morning rush hour Friday.

Bourne Police said a pickup truck was towing the berries in a trailer when another vehicle cut it off around 6:30 a.m.

The pickup truck driver swerved to avoid hitting the vehicle and ended up jackknifing into a box truck.

The box truck slammed into a guardrail.

That driver, a 42-year-old man from Beverly, was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with what police described as "significant injuries."

The box truck is registered to Red's Best in Boston and was hauling tuna at the time of the crash. The company's owner told WBZ-TV the driver's injuries are not life-threatening, but he's in "good spirits" and will have a long recovery.

The pickup driver who was hauling the cranberries, a 33-year-old man from East Harwich, was not seriously hurt.

Police said they are still looking for the driver of the vehicle that cut him off.
