Roxbury Man Charged With Fatally Stabbing Wife Held Without Bail

BOSTON (CBS) - Wearing a white Tyvek suit and hood, Valdir Chaves faced a judge Monday. The 43-year old Roxbury man faces first degree murder charges in the death of his wife 38-year-old Dora Chaves.

Prosecutors say on Sunday Chaves allegedly stabbed her multiple times inside their third floor Clarence Street apartment. Dora's two children were home at the time.

"One of the family members discovered the victim with stab wounds on many part of her body," a prosecutor said in court on Monday.

Investigators say the night before she died, she left the apartment and returned Sunday morning with police asking her husband to leave the house, which he did, but he later returned.

"He and the victim went into a bedroom. The door was locked. People could hear at first an argument and then the victim screaming. Mr. Chaves came out with blood on him," the prosecutor said.

Dora was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. Neighbor Maria Teixeira lives next door. She says the couple was always pleasant.

Chaves has two kids of his own. "She's gone and it's very sad," Teixeira said.

Neighbors say they never heard the couple fight before in the past. The night before her death some neighbors say they heard a lot of loud music coming from their home. "The music was very loud and he was speaking bad words," Teixiera said.

"It's a disaster and his concern are the kids," defense attorney Earl Howard said.

Chaves is being held without bail. He's due back in court on September 13 for probable cause hearing.
