FALL RIVER - Route 24 north in Fall River was shut down for more than three hours Friday morning after a woman walking on the highway was hit and killed.

It happened around 5:15 a.m. near the exit to Airport Road and North Main Street.

Massachusetts State Police said a woman was walking on the northbound side when she was struck by a pickup truck. She died at the scene. Her name has not been made public.

All lanes re-opened around 8:45 a.m.

"The facts and circumstances of the crash, including why the pedestrian was on the highway, are under investigation," State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.
