The drivers of both cars were rushed to the Lahey Clinic in Burlington in critical condition.

"The two vehicles involved are a 2008 Hyundai Accent and a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt; at this time, the investigation into which vehicle was going the wrong way is ongoing," State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.

No names have been released, but Procopio said the driver of the Hyundai was a 20-year-old woman from Wayland.  The Cobalt driver was a 27-year-old man from Dracut.

A breakdown lane was opened for traffic to slowly get by, but there were major delays in the area for the morning rush hour.
