Rich Keefe: Scarnecchia A Huge Loss For Patriots Coaching Staff
BOSTON (CBS) - One day after the Patriots parted ways with longtime assistant coach Pepper Johnson, the team announced an even bigger shake-up in the coaching staff.
Dante Scarnecchia, the offensive line coach and assistant head coach, will retire after 32 seasons in the NFL, 30 of which came with the New England Patriots (1982-88, 1991-2013).
Scarnecchia coached in 18 of the franchise's 21 playoff seasons, and he's coached in 39 of the 43 playoff games in franchise history, including all seven Super Bowls.
Every time the offensive line looked makeshift or porous in the preseason, or even early on in the regular season, Patriots fans could always hang their hat with the notion that coach Dante Scarnecchia would be able to figure it out - and they were usually right.
However, fans of the team will not be granted that same luxury this upcoming season.
The team announced that Dave DeGuglielmo, a 22-year coaching veteran whose most recent NFL job came with the Jets in 2012, will join the staff as the new offensive line coach.
Rich Keefe discussed Scarnecchia's retirement Wednesday night on The Adam Jones Show.
"They are going to have their work cut out for them, and so will Dave DeGuglielmo - which is hard to pronounce, but if the offensive line struggles everyone will know his name."
