Report: White Supremacist Killer Keith Luke's Organs Donated
BOSTON (CBS) – The mother of convicted double murderer Keith Luke reportedly donated Luke's organs after he killed himself in prison earlier this month.
According to the Brockton Enterprise, Luke was kept on life support for two days after his suicide attempt, so arrangements could be made to donate several of his organs.
Luke, 28, was a self-proclaimed white supremacist who had carved a swastika into his forehead in 2009. He was convicted last year of killing two people and raping and shooting a third in Brockton in January 2009.
It's not clear how many organs were donated or who the recipients were, because those details are rarely revealed.
Renowned bioethicist Art Caplan of New York University said it's also very rare for a prisoner's organs to be donated because he has to be on life support when he died.
"It's best to keep the system anonymous, as much as it might sound like, 'Hey, I'd like to know where that organ came from.' To make the system work you have to keep a certain amount of anonymity between donors and recipients," Kaplan told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Wednesday.
"Part of the irony of it is from the point of view of biology, your heart, your liver, your kidney, they don't hold cultural views, social views, hate-based views. They just work."
