Report: Red Sox Prospect Jon Denney Arrested After Clashing With Police
BOSTON (CBS) -- It's been a pretty quiet spring training thus far for the Boston Red Sox in terms of the major league club, but a teenaged minor leaguer has made some headlines for the wrong reasons.
Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan reported Friday that Jon Denney, a 2013 Red Sox draft pick, was arrested in Florida early Thursday morning for driving with a suspended license and becoming belligerent with police officers.
According to the report, Denney was actually stopped by police late Wednesday night, and he was issued a citation for driving with his suspended license. The suspended license stemmed from a prior DUI in Arkansas.
Roughly two hours later, police observed Denney enter his truck and drive out of a parking lot, leading to another traffic stop.
According to police, Denney told police "he was a Boston Red Sox player and he didn't care he had money and made more money than we would ever see." He also said "he would be out in no time because of who he played for and that he made three million a year."
When police asked Denney why he was in the area, Denney replied, "Partying and looking to get some [expletive]."
The Red Sox acknowledged the arrest but offered no further comment to Yahoo.
Denney, a catcher, played in 26 games for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox last season, hitting .203 with just three doubles and no home runs.
The Yahoo report notes that Denney signed for $875,000 last year and is expected to make about $1,000 per month this year.
