Report: Red Sox May Not Fill Vacant GM Spot
BOSTON (CBS) -- Mike Hazen left his job as Red Sox general manager to take over the same job for the Arizona Diamondbacks last week, and now Red Sox vice president of amateur and international scouting Amiel Sawdaye has joined Hazen in Arizona as well.
Considering Sawdaye figured to be a top candidate for the vacant GM job, his departure prompted The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham to ask team president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski if the Red Sox were still looking to hire a new GM.
"Still working on some final decisions," Dombrowski told Abraham.
Considering Dombrowski oversees baseball operations, the duties of the GM in Boston are not the same as the duties of a GM elsewhere, so the need for a GM in the traditional sense is lessened.
Abraham also noted that bench coach Torey Lovullo could be Arizona's next target to acquire from Dombrowski's team: "Arizona also needs a manager and Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo is a leading candidate. Lovullo did not return a message seeking comment about his aspirations."
