Report: Red Sox Call Up Eduardo Rodriguez From Pawtucket

BOSTON (CBS) -- Despite a recent mini-turnaround, the Red Sox starting rotation still ranks dead last in MLB with a 5.10 ERA.

Accordingly, changes are on the way.

The Red Sox have called up left-handed starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez on Wednesday, according to the Providence Journal's Tim Britton.

Rodriguez will start Thursday's game in Texas, according to the report.

Britton reported that the call-up does not signify a permanent change to the rotation. Rather, Rodriguez affords the starters a day of rest in the midst of a 20-day stretch with no scheduled off days.

The 22-year-old Venezuelan is currently in his first season at the Triple-A level. He is 4-3 with a 2.98 ERA, striking out 44 batters and walking just seven. His 1.097 WHIP is tops among PawSox starters, and his ERA is second only to Brian Johnson's 2.92.

The Red Sox enter play on Wednesday with the 30th-ranked starters ERA at 5.10.
