BOSTON (CBS) -- With NFL free agency in full swing, the New England Patriots are clearing up some cap space.

Nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga was informed of his release on Wednesday, according to ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss, a move that will save the Patriots $2.5 million towards the 2014 salary cap.

In need of some help on the defensive line, the Patriots acquired the Sopoaga from the Philadelphia Eagles for a fifth-round draft pick at 2013 trade deadline. The veteran nose tackle played in six games, including two starts, but tumbled down the depth chart and was inactive for the final two games of the regular season and both of New England's playoff games.
