Report: Patriots Already Approaching Revis About Long-Term Deal

BOSTON (CBS) -- Darrelle Revis hasn't even played a game -- regular season or preseason -- for the Patriots yet, but the team reportedly wants to lock the All Pro corner into a long-term deal.

According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, Patriots owner Robert Kraft has already pulled Revis aside to gauge his interest on remaining a Patriot for the foreseeable future.

"Revis has been so good so far that they are privately starting to talk about extending his contract," Cole said in a video on BleacherReport.com. "The Patriots like what they see so much -- they think they see the next Ty Law and that shut-down cover corner to really get their corner going -- that they'd like to extend him out.

"Robert Kraft has pulled Revis aside and started to talk to him to see if they could get a long-term deal worked out," said Cole.

Revis and the Patriots agreed a two-year, $32 million deal in March, which contains a team option for the second year. Revis is due to earn a $12 million roster bonus next year, and would carry a cap hit of $25 million.

It's a figure the Patriots would like to come off the books for 2015, but they'd love to see Revis stick around.

Cornerbacks have been striking it rich lately, with Arizona's Patrick Peterson inking a five-year, $70 million deal (with $47.4 million guaranteed) and Seattle's Richard Sherman signing a four-year, $56 million deal (with $40 million guaranteed) this offseason. Revis held out while a member of the New York Jets in 2010, missing the majority of training camp and all four preseason games before signing a four-year, $32 million contract.

Felger & Mazz On Revis Extension Talks:

Cole doesn't think Revis will take much of a pay cut to remain with the Patriots long-term, but says we could see the often frugal Patriots open up their wallets for a player of his caliber.

"This is going to be one of the times when the Patriots have to pull out their checkbook and say 'we're going to pay for a premiere player; a game-changing player,'" said Cole.

The Patriots will get their first look at Revis in game action Thursday night when they open their preseason slate against the Redskins in Washington.
