Religious Leaders Urge End To Market Basket Stalemate
LOWELL (CBS) – Religious leaders in Lowell are urging Market Basket to resolve the ongoing company stalemate saying it is hurting workers.
The leaders speaking out comes as employees ignored the company deadline to return to work by Friday.
The leaders gathered at the site of the first Market Basket store on Friday.
St. Patrick's Father Patrick Ouellette told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 that his parish was not taking sides on the Demoulas family dispute but said the company needed to return to its roots.
"The first Demoulas's had a clear view of what they wanted to do. That view, I think, has become somewhat clouded," said Ouellette. "There is an old Kenyan proverb that says 'when the elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.'"
Another leader said the battle was hitting workers where it counts most.
"When it hurts our pockets, that's when it really hurts," Pastor Rafael Najem from the Community Christian Fellowship said.
