Red Sox Sign OF Andres Torres To Minor League Deal

BOSTON (CBS) --  The Boston Red Sox have signed veteran outfielder Andres Torres to a minor league contract, in hopes the 36-year-old could eventually provide some depth to their big league outfield.

Torres last played with the San Francisco Giants in 2013, hitting .250 over 103 games and playing all three outfield positions, with center field his primary position. He clubbed 17 doubles and scored 33 runs in 2013, and was a contributor on the 2010 World Series champion Giants with 43 doubles, eight triples and 26 stolen bases. During that postseason, Torres hit .276 with four doubles and three RBIs.

A nine-year veteran, Torres has appeared in 650 games with the Giants, Tigers, Rangers and Mets. The switch-hitting outfielder is a career .242 hitter, but has committed just 13 errors in the field.

Torres underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from his left heel last November, and was unable to train with any teams over the offseason. He is still likely a few weeks away from being able to join Triple-A Pawtucket, and then he'll have to prove he can still play before making it to the majors.

The Red Sox outfield has been historically bad in 2014, with Jackie Bradley Jr., Grady Sizemore, Jonny Gomes, Daniel Nava and an injured Shane Victorino batting a combined .218 this season.
