Mountain Man No More: Mike Napoli Shaves Off Beard

BOSTON (CBS) -- Many of the Boston Red Sox shaved their famous beards shortly after the Red Sox won the World Series last October.

Some of those clippings even ended up on the auction block -- for charity, of course.

But Mike Napoli didn't go near a razor. The Sox first baseman wanted to keep the good times rolling -- and those beard-tugs coming -- so he kept his burly beard for the 2014 season. That made it difficult for him to walk down the streets of Boston without being noticed.

But after the team struggled mightily this season to the tune of a 68-89 record, Napoli decided it was finally time for a change.

Prior to Wednesday night's 11-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, Napoli shaved off his famous beard. The Red Sox Tweeted out a photo of before and after pictures of the first baseman following the win:

With all the minor league call ups over the recent weeks, it's been hard enough to tell who is in the Boston dugout on a nightly basis. Now, Napoli's makeover will make it a little tougher over the last few days of the season.

A little change might not be a bad thing for Napoli, though. He has been sidelined for the last week with a foot injury, and is hitting just .248 for the season with 17 homers.
