Red Sox Fan Leaves Hospital After Getting Hit By Foul Ball At Fenway Park
BOSTON (CBS) — A woman hit in the head by a foul ball during a New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park on Friday night has been released from the hospital.
Stephanie Wapenski was watching the game with her fiancé, Matt Fraenza, when a line drive off the bat of New York's Didi Gregorious hit her while she was seated along the third base line.
"It just came right at me before I could think or react," she says, adding that she was looking directly at the field when the ball struck her between the eyes.
She said she returned home with a massive headache.
"My heading was pounding," she said. "It sort of feels like someone put a vice around it."
Fraenza, a Yankees fan, says Wapenski is a "die-hard Red Sox fan" whom he proposed to during a game against New York at Fenway Park last year. They live with their eight-month-old daughter in Connecticut.
Wapenski has attended more than 100 games and typically keeps the score books, and once she drove 26 hours to go to a Red Sox playoff game in Tampa Bay.
She suffered a slight concussion and received 35 stitches in a gash between her eyebrows on her forehead, according to Fraenza.
He says she is doing OK and recovering in Connecticut.
The Red Sox sent Wapenski flowers and promised to give her safer seats for her next game.
In June, another fan suffered life-threatening injuries when she was struck by a broken bat at Fenway. Tonya Carpenter was also sitting on the third base side when she was hit on June 5.
She was hospitalized for several days.
