Red Sox Call Up Left-Handed Pitcher Edwin Escobar From Pawtucket

BOSTON (CBS) – The Red Sox recalled left-handed pitcher Edwin Escobar from Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday.

Escobar will be wearing uniform number 72 and was available for Sunday afternoon's series finale in Anaheim against the California Angels.

Escobar, 22, was acquired from the San Francisco Giants along with right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree in the trade for Jake Peavy on July 26. The call up marks the first Major League stint for Escobar.

Between the PawSox and Triple-A Fresno where he began this season, Escobar has gone 3-8 with a 4.76 ERA (65 ER/123.0 IP), 40 walks and 106 strikeouts in 22 starts.

To make room for Escobar on the 25-man roster, Hembree was optioned to Pawtucket.

Only hours before he was optioned to Pawtucket, Hembree, 25, threw a career-high four scoreless innings in his Red Sox debut Saturday night during the Sox' 19-inning loss to the Angels.
